Inclusivity in Large Enrolment Classes 

What is it about?

This snapshot from the Large Enrolment Online Community of Practice (OCoP) focuses on identifying challenges of inclusivity in large enrolment classes and proposes solutions (shared by participants) to mitigate and support inclusivity in these spaces.  

Challenge: Recognizing and addressing the diverse needs of many students within large enrolment settings. 

Key Strategies included: 

  1. Fostering a comfortable and safe environment for students to share backgrounds and experiences. 
  2. Regularly conducting surveys or feedback sessions to understand student needs. 
  3. Valuing and recognizing diverse backgrounds and experiences in class discussions. 

Challenge: Integrating inclusive practices in course design and delivery. 

Key Strategies included:  

  1. Adapting teaching methods to cater to different learning styles and needs. 
  2. Incorporating diverse materials into the curriculum. 
  3. Utilizing UDL principles, especially in assessment practices. 
  4. Providing flexible assessment methods, like offering a late bank for submissions. 

Challenge: Ensuring equitable experiences in large enrolment classes. 

Key Strategies:  

  1. Regularly reflecting on teaching practices to identify areas for improvement. 
  2. Incorporating student feedback into course design and delivery. 
  3. Offering clear and specific instructions for assignments and assessments.
