Opening for a Sessional Educational Development Consultant

Sessional Educational Development Consultant - Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning

The University of Calgary and the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning (TI) now seek applications for a sessional appointment as an educational development consultant.

The anticipated start date is September 1, 2025, with an end date of December 30, 2025.

The primary focus of this position will be to support educational development resources, programming, and initiatives for academic staff as they relate to student assessment practices, including the development of resources related to institutional principles for the assessment of student learning. In this role, they will:

  • collaborate with and support colleagues in the TI and academic units across the university to develop evidence-based resources that support meaningful student assessment practices across disciplines;
  • collaborate with the Assessment Principles Group and units across UCalgary to develop and translate research and community-informed institutional assessment principles into educational development resources, programs and initiatives;
  • collaborate with the Assessment Principles Group to consult with and gather feedback from the academic community and academic units on meaningful student assessment practices and collate research and information gathered into institutional reports and presentations, and educational development initiatives;
  • consult with individual course instructors and academic programs to design meaningful, aligned, and inclusive student assessment practices;
  • collaborate to create, lead and evaluate scholarly educational development programs (e.g., workshop series, programs, consultations, partnerships, networks) related to student assessment practices;
  • contribute to existing TI educational development programs, including consultations, supporting institutional programs such as the UCalgary Teaching Awards and Grants program, course certificate programs and building disciplinary partnerships and connections;
  • engage in scholarship related to educational development, teaching, learning and student assessment in post-secondary education.

Position Requirements

  • Earned doctorate (or nearing completion) with experience leading educational development initiatives for graduate students and academic staff in higher education.
  • Growth-oriented educator with the ability to collaborate and build relationships across the academy.
  • Demonstrated expertise and scholarly experience in research-informed practices for the assessment of student learning in higher education.
  • Experience supporting the development and integration of institutional principles for the assessment of student learning in higher education.
  • Experience contributing to teaching, learning and assessment working groups or committees in higher education.
  • Experience preparing institutional reports, environmental scans, and presentations related to student assessment practices in higher education.
  • Strong track record of teaching at the university level.
  • Ability to engage colleagues in meaningful dialogue and decision-making processes about teaching and learning in post-secondary education.
  • A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion and Indigenous Ways of Knowing in a post-secondary context.
  • A record of engagement in the scholarship of educational development, teaching and learning in post-secondary education, especially as it relates to student assessment practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and a proven track record of building relationships across the academy and supporting a culture of care, kindness, collaboration and respect.
  • Demonstrated expertise related to one or more of the University of Calgary’s Strategic Priorities in Experiential and work-integrated learning, future-focused academic programming (e.g., online/blended learning, stackable credentials), sustainability, equity, diversity and inclusion, Indigenous perspectives, and/or mental health will be considered an asset.
