Reflections on the Fall 2024 Term: Start, Stop, Continue
What is it about?
This snapshot highlights strategies for teaching large enrolment courses, reflecting on what to start, stop, and continue for the Winter 2025 term. It explores engagement methods, assessment techniques, and solutions for challenges like workload balance and student anxiety.
Participants shared methods to increase engagement in large classes by creating dynamic, student-centered environments. Strategies included:
- Using anonymized exemplars to clarify expectations and provide feedback.
- Using digital tools like Top Hat to encourage participation and interaction
- Offering flexible discussion formats to meet diverse student needs.
- Designing classroom activities that are relevant to students’ interests and future goals
Key challenges in teaching large enrolment courses were discussed, with a focus on equitable and efficient solutions including:
- Shifting students away from grade-focused mindsets to emphasize curiosity and genuine learning.
- Supporting students dealing with anxiety and external stressors like housing and financial instability.
- Managing the workload of large-scale teaching while maintaining quality and balance.
Participants explored innovative assessment practices tailored to large classes including:
- Incorporating low-stakes assessments to foster consistent engagement and reduce pressure.
- Using anonymized exemplars from previous students to clarify grading expectations and reduce anxiety.
- Aligning assessments with equity-focused principles to accommodate diverse needs and circumstances.
